My name is Rebecca Martinez. I am a single Mom, a proud native of the Santa Maria Valley, and a passionate advocate for my son Luco and for all people affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. When my son was diagnosed in 2012 at the age of 3, I had no idea the journey that lie ahead. Luco was mostly nonverbal, combative, and struggled with every activity of daily living. Mom was hangin by a thread. I knew very little about what ASD even was nor had I ever known anyone with Autism or any other developmental delay or disability. I felt lost and very, very alone. The community I lived in had very little resources at the time. So, I found myself doing hours of online research as well as networking with anyone and everyone I knew. It took hours of sorting and reading to get the tiniest amount of information or support. I was desperate for hope and effective help. Honestly, I can’t remember how I even heard of the Central Coast Autism Spectrum Center but when I did, boy oh boy! I had finally found an organization of people that “got it.” Who didn’t judge us. Who understood my unique child and the immense challenges (not to mention the palpable emotions) we were experiencing. Today Luco is an incredibly witty, kind, tenacious, creative, and DETERMINED 15-year- old young man. He is THRIVING!! As I sit here and write this, today, was his first day as a freshman in high school. I think back on our journey and all it took to get here and I am filled with gratitude. For the countless people who cared enough. Who entered our lives in order to help Luco (and Mom) grow through the challenging seasons. They made a profound impact on our lives. My intention as a parent ambassador is to pour some of that impact back into my community.
